The Beirut Port Administration issued the following statement:
“The Beirut Port Management and Investment said that the smoke seen this morning was caused by a limited rekindling inside the isolated container that had caught fire yesterday, Monday, confirming that the Beirut Port Fire Brigade intervened immediately, with support from the Beirut Fire Brigade and Civil Defense, and that the container was cooled again and the fire extinguished.
According to the details, a limited fire broke out yesterday, Monday, in one of the containers aboard a ship at sea while it was heading toward the Port of Beirut. As soon as the incident occurred, the ship’s captain reported that the flames had been brought under control.
Meanwhile, the port authority and the Lebanese Navy were informed of the matter and immediately moved toward the ship’s location at sea in coordination with the PSO and PFSO of the Port of Beirut. After verifying that the fire had been extinguished and fully contained, the ship was allowed to enter and dock at Berth 16, amid strict security measures and safety procedures, with the support and accompaniment of the Beirut Fire Brigade, the port fire team, the rescue center التابعة to the Lebanese Army, and the container terminal management.
As soon as the ship docked, the specialized teams began removing the container from the vessel. It was handled in accordance with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), and under the highest public safety standards to ensure the safety of the ship’s crew, employees, the port premises, and the vessel itself, with no injuries or additional damage recorded.”
