The Constitutional Council has unanimously decided to reject the three appeals filed against the law extending the mandate of Parliament.
The appeals were submitted by the Lebanese Forces, the Free Patriotic Movement, and a number of independent reformist MPs.
In its ruling, the Council affirmed the constitutionality of the extension under the current exceptional circumstances, considering it a measure justified by necessity in light of the ongoing crisis facing the country.
At the same time, the Council stressed that the extension cannot become a permanent reality, emphasizing the need to shorten the extended term once the exceptional conditions that led to this decision are no longer present.
The decision further underscored that reducing the Parliament’s extended mandate constitutes both a national and constitutional obligation, placing responsibility on the relevant authorities to take the necessary steps to restore the normal functioning of democratic life as soon as possible.
