Emergency meeting in Baghdad....Government decisions after the US-Saudi attack

The Iraqi National Security Council held an emergency meeting, chaired by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi, to discuss the security repercussions and take urgent measures to deal with the developments.

The council condemned the attack, considering it a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, particularly as it came at a time when the Iraqi government was conducting contacts with the relevant parties to address outstanding security issues and verify allegations related to the targeting of Saudi territory.

Amid the escalation, the council approved an integrated security plan to strengthen deployment and control on the ground, with the aim of preventing any breach of Iraqi sovereignty and confronting any activity that could threaten the security of neighboring countries.

It also tasked the Foreign Ministry with acting in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to document what happened and take the necessary steps to preserve Iraq’s rights on the international stage.

The council renewed its affirmation that confronting any attacks or security challenges remains the exclusive prerogative of the Iraqi government and the state’s constitutional institutions, rejecting any moves outside this framework.

The Iraqi government called on all parties to avoid any steps that could increase regional tension or undermine efforts to impose security and stability, while at the same time affirming its continued implementation of the agreement to end the mission of the international coalition and to proceed with the plan to confine arms to the hands of the state in accordance with the approved program.
